Research Interests
There are two foci to my research. One is book analysis, especially social justice issues in children's literature. I believe that it is important to give children world perspectives and insights into activist opportunities. This research agenda will be evidenced in book chapters on "Child Activists in Children's Literature," "Children in War," and "Children's Literature about LGBT People and Their Families." I received a $3000 grant to internationalize by international literature class in 2006. My other area of interest is literature response. For a MURMSI grant, Dr. Zhihui Fang, Dr. Rose Pringle and I worked in sixth grade classrooms to teaching reading strategies during science class and to examine the impact of a Home Science Reading Program, where students took home award-winning books on science topics to share with their families once a week.
