Organizations and Conferences
NCTE: the National Council of Teachers of English
I have been heavily involved with NCTE over the past two decades, and consider it as my home organization. I have served as elected and invited members on various committees such as the Executive Committee for ECC, NCTE, Secondary and Elementary Nominating Committees, and Commissions on Language and Reading as well as the NCTE/TESOL committee, attended the leadership retreat and serve as a consultant for its PD network.
In addition, I have served on the review boards of various NCTE journals: Language Arts, Talking Points and Voices from the Middle, and reviewed manuscripts for every journal operated by NCTE. Since 2002-05, I also served as co-editor with my colleague for the professional book-review column in Language Arts.
I present every year at the NCTE conference, have given keynotes at its special conferences, and will present, chair and lead round-table sessions this fall in Nashville, TN.
TESOL: The International Conference of Teachers of English as Other Language
I am a member at TESOL. Although my research has a strong focus on Literacy for English language learners, I am not as involved in this organization as in NCTE, which has taken most of my time and energy. This year, I attended its conference at Tampa, Florida and thoroughly enjoyed it.

AERA: American Education and Research Association
I held a membership at this organization for many years and presented there several times. However, I decided a few years ago, I need to focus my energy at the organization which I feel mostly associated with, that is NCTE, where I can benefit as well as contribute myself most as a professional.

IRA: International Reading Association
I am a member of IRA, and feel very connected with this organization. But I haven't attended its conferences for several years, because with my research in writing, NCTE provides a bigger audience for my work.
