Clark , M.A. (2004, November) Embracing diversity: Teaching and modeling appreciation for other cultures. Third Annual Worldwide Forum on Education and Culture. John Cabot University , Rome , Italy .
The United States and many other countries are becoming increasingly multicultural populations with people from a variety of countries, cultures and ethnicities. In the U.S, there are a few states in which minority groups constitute the majority of people and it is predicted that this trend will continue. Additionally, there is an increasing number of children who are born into families with mixed heritages with regard to race, religion, culture or ethnicity. Research has demonstrated that a positive classroom environment and school climate creates conditions conducive for learning, motivation, and increased academic achievement as well as collaboration with others. This presentation focused on a 4 session classroom guidance unit that was developed by Dr. Clark and her practicum and internship supervisees to help elementary students value their classmates, learn more about one another, and to show caring and respect for all.
